President meets Commonwealth Special Envoy to Maldives

President Dr Mohamed Waheed has met with the Commonwealth Special Envoy to the Maldives, Sir Donald McKinnon today.

Discussions at the meeting held this morning at the President’s Office focused on the current political situation in the Maldives.

President Waheed assured that he was open for an early election, but noted that it can only be done according to the country’s laws. He added the importance of creating a peaceful environment before an independent election can be held, and encouraged the cooperation all parties in achieving this.

Sir Donald McKinnon highlighted the need for dialogue between all parties in order to find a way forward in resolving the current situation.
