PPM coalition likely to have won 520 seats, says PPM

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said it estimates, together with its coalition parties, to have won 520 seats in the Local Council Election.

Elections Commission has not yet announced the preliminary results of this election, which was held on Saturday, 18 January 2014.

Chairperson of PPM’s Election Committee Mohamed Tholal said that PPM candidates contested for 541 seats, and are likely to have won 290 seats; while the coalition is likely to have won 520 seats.

He expressed concern over the delay in the announcement of the results.

“So far the results show that the PPM coalition has majority in most island and atoll councils. But the announcement of the results is being delayed - this is worrying. Elections Commission has the capability to do this faster,” he said.

Meanwhile opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that with 700 seats, it has won clear majority in the Local Council Election. About 900 candidates contested in the election on MDP ticket.
