Former Commission of Police Abdulla Riyaz has withdrawn defamation charges against former president Mohamed Nasheed.
The former commissioner, who resigned in November after a near 2-year tenure, filed a case in Civil Court in September 2012 seeking MVR 3.7 million over statements by Mohamed Nasheed, shortly after the release of the Commission of National Inquiry report that looked into the alleged coup d'état of February 2012.
Civil Court stated today that Abdulla Riyaz has filed a request to cancel the lawsuit and thus, the court will not continue the case.
Speaking at a rally in Usfasgandu on the day after the inquiry report was released, former president Nasheed said that he holds Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim and Commissioner of Police Abdualla Riyaz responsible for staging a coup d'état and that will continue to call them ‘baaghee’, a derogatory word in Dhivehi for instigator of a coup.
