Broadcasting Commission requests withdrawal of cases against journalists

The Broadcasting Commission has asked to withdraw the cases filed to court by the former government against journalists and broadcasters.

This request was made through a letter by President of Broadcasting Commission Mohamed Shaheeb to President Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Shaheeb also asked the new government, within the first 100 days, to sign the Five Point Pledge on media freedom.

The letter also informed President Yameen that the pledge was first sent to the President’s Office for signing in April 2013.

Shaheeb highlighted that the inclusion of these two items in the 100-day action plan of the government would be symbolic of the government’s support for media freedom.
