Former president Waheed joins PPM

Former president Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has joined the ruling party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Dr Waheed signed the membership form to join PPM at a ceremony held at Nasandhura Palace Hotel today, which was also attended by President Abdulla Yameen.

Earlier this morning, the council of Dr Waheed’s party, Gaumee Itthihad Party (GIP), announced its decision to dissolve GIP.

Other officials who joined PPM at today’s ceremony include former Political Advisor to the President Ahmed Thaufeeg, Minister of State for Education Dr Abdulla Nazeer, High Commissioner of Maldives to Sri Lanka Hussain Shihab, former Media Secretary at the President’s Office Masood Imad, Ilyaz Hussain, and Jaufar Eesa Adam.

GIP said that its decision to dissolve the party follows sentiments that the current political atmosphere does not allow room for small parties to maneuver in the Maldives.
