Salaries of state and deputy ministers reduced by MVR 5000

President has decided to reduce the salaries of deputy ministers and ministers of state by MVR 5,000 per month.

Spokesperson that the President’s Office Ibrahim Muaz last night confirmed the president's decision and said that the order has been communicated to the relevant authorities.

“President’s decision comes under the government’s policy to reduce expenses. He plans to do a lot more in this regard,” Muaz said.

The decision reduces the salary of a state minister from MVR 46,000 to MVR 41,000 per month and the salary of a deputy minister from MVR 35,000 to MVR 30,000 per month.

The government currently has 28 ministers of states and 44 deputy ministers. The decision to reduce the salaries would therefore save the government MVR 360,000 per month or MVR 4.3 million per year.

Soon after taking office, President Yameen had reduced the presidential salary in half, a promise he had made during the campaign.
