Five individuals apply for vacant PG post

Five individuals have applied for the Prosecutor General (PG) post left vacant following Ahmed Muizzu’s impromptu resignation on 25 November.

According to the President’s Office Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz, the candidates are; prominent lawyer Maumoon Hameed, former Tourism Minister Mariyam Zulfa, current Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem, State Prosecutor at the Prosecutor General’s Office Aishath Fazna Ahmed and Ismail Waheed.

Muaz said the President’s Office will forward the names for Parliament approval as soon as they complete the review process, which is currently underway.

Article 4 of the Prosecutor General’s Act states that the candidate must not be a shareholder, member or employee in a company, firm or partnership that engages in a Sharia law related practice.

It also requires the person to be a graduate in law and to hold fours years of experience, not be a member or an activist of a political party, not be a person holding a political post and not have a criminal conviction or a criminal breach of trust or offence of corruption.
