Bomb explosion at Sultan Park:
Court allows arrest period of 15 days

Criminal Court has extended the arrest period of Mohamed Ameen of Gn. Fuvahmulah, who has been arrested regarding the bomb explosion in Sultan Park in 2007.

The extension comes after the Court released him last Saturday night when he was produced at the Court to be issued an arrest decision. Following this release, he was arrested and brought before the Court for a second time.

Criminal Court said regarding his release on Saturday night that he could not be held under arrest on any legal ground, as the Court had not presented to the Police their previous order to Interpol to issue the Red Notice. However he was arrested later that night following a Court order issued on the same night.

The Court added 15 days to his arrest period when he was produced at the Court last night by the Police.

The order issued last night by the Court to arrest Ameen states that the mobile phone sim card used for the explosion was registered in his name, and was sold by Smart Mobile shop of which Ameen was an employee. Moreover, equipments used to create explosives were found in an apartment rented by Ameen.

Twelve tourists were injured in the bomb explosion in Sultan Park. Sixteen people were accused of being involved in terrorist activity, several of whom have been found guilty and sentenced to prison. Several others fled the country, and the Red Notice has been issued to arrest them.

Ahmed Naseer of Saadhunaa Manzil, Ga. Kan’duhulhudhoo and Mohamed Sobah of V. Landhoogeaage, two of the three people sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of being involved in a terrorist activity following the incident in Sultan Park, were pardoned and released on 25 July 2010.
