New Home Minister vows to solve drug issue

Newly appointed Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer has said he will bring an “adequate” solution to the issue of drugs plaguing the country.

Speaking to Sun today, Umar said drugs is the basis of the society’s criminal culture and that he will find a solution within the five-year term.

“We will produce some form of results for the drugs issue, within the next five years,” Umar said.

When asked of MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor, who has been allowed to remain in house arrest over pending a six-month prison sentence over contempt of court for refusing to face drug charges, Umar said the matter was decided before he took office, but said the decision is now under review.

“We are working on reviewing the decision,” Umar Naseer said.

Umar Naseer took over the Minister of Home Affairs yesterday as part of the second batch of appointments President Abdulla Yameen has made to his new government, following his inauguration as president on Sunday.
