Preliminary results: Yameen wins by 6022 votes

The preliminary results of the second round of the presidential election held on Saturday shows Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate Abdulla Yameen won against Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, former president Mohamed Nasheed by a difference of 6022 votes.

Announced around 1 a.m. on Saturday night, the results shows Abdulla Yameen received 111,203 votes, 51.39 percent and MDP candidate Mohamed Nasheed 105,181 votes, 48.61 percent.

The total number of valid votes stands at 216,381 ballots. Total invalid votes were 2,237 ballots. The total number of ballots cast was 218,621 ballots.

The total number of eligible voters for the second round of the presidential election was 239,165 voters. The voter turn out was 91.41 percent of the eligible voters.

Announcing the preliminary results, President of the Elections Commission said the final results will be announced at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.

He said 19 complaints were received in total, but said they were minor complaints and will not have a drastic effect on the overall percentage of the votes.
