Amnesty International has said that a request has been made from Police authorities to make public the number of people they have arrested and the number of people who had to receive medical treatment after their arrest, but the Police have not released these details so far.
In a statement released by Amnesty International yesterday, they accused Police of having used excessive force at Raalhugan’du area last night, and condemned this act.
Amnesty International claimed to have been informed by credible sources that Police and Military arrested more than a dozen people during their raid of the MDP protest last night. Several people were also arrested while they were in the hospital receiving medical treatment for their injuries. They were first taken to police detention centres in Male’ and later to Dhoonidhoo.
The statement also says that this raid was in retaliation for clashes which took place earlier, when windows of the police station were smashed by stones. MDP protesters deny Police accusations that they are responsible for these attacks.
Also, a 16-year old boy was injured during last night’s unrest and Amnesty International’s delegate in Male’ was not allowed to visit him, according to the statement. The boy is in the custody of Police Child Protection Unit.
Amnesty International is an international organisation founded in London, working for human rights.
