Former MP Azim

High Court has today ruled that the former Medhu-Henveiru MP Ali Azim’s arrest from parliament on 26 October was lawful.

Criminal Court court extended Ali Azim’s detention period by 15 days on 27 October, which was appealed in High Court on the same day.

The High Court ruled today that; as the constitution requires the State security services to conduct the security of the parliament and as Ali Azim was arrested on 26 October for assaulting a military officer charged with ensuring the security of the parliament, the military is obliged to stop any persons who makes such an assaults. It also stated that substantial evidence was presented to the Criminal Court to prove that Ali Azim had assaulted a military officer.

The ruling continued to state that Ali Azim’s lawyer was present outside the parliament compound at the time of Ali Azim's arrest and that there was no breach of conduct in his arrested.

Police transferred former MP Ali Azim to house arrest on 1 November.
