Religion was the reason behind the victory over mercenaries: Dr Jameel

Vice presidential candidate of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that Islam was the reason behind the Maldives’ victory over the mercenaries on 3 November 1988.

Dr Jameel made this remark while speaking at a function held last night on the occasion of Victory Day.

“Various groups have planned to attack this small country on several occasions, and finally, the attack on 3 November came with modern heavy weaponry. A small nation, with limited resources, limited manpower, limited soldiers; yet we came out victorious,” he said.

Dr Jameel said that we should learn lessons from the past and pray that such incidents are not repeated.

“We should pray that the country does not have to deal with traitors like Luthfee, Sagaru Nasir, Abdulla Shahid. We should pray to be saved from corrupt leaders. We should pray for leaders who will bring about discipline for generations to come,” he said.

He said that Maldivians should recall their history and honour the people who served the country. He stressed the importance of respecting the police and the military, and teaching the country’s history to the children.

He said that Maldivians enjoy peace and order today because of the sacrifices by several national heroes in the past, and paid tribute to Shaheed Corporal Hussain Adam who died during the attack on 3 November 1988.
