Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has received official party status in parliament today.
The party gained recognition after Kurendhoo MP Ahmed Moosa signed for the party.
MDA deputy leader, Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir told Sun that the party requested for official party status in parliament during the Eid al-Adha holidays last week.
“We have received party status and got a lot of support from PPM (Progressive Party of Maldives) and JP (Jumhoory Party). We will now be represented in parliament as a party,” Amir said.
He said that the recognition opens new doors for MDA to work for the rights of the people. The party will now be represented under a parliamentary group and MPs will have opportunities sit in parliament committees.
The current MDA membership in parliament consists of party leader, Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir and Kurendhoo MP Ahmed Moosa.
Parliament regulation requires a party to have a minimum of 3 MPs to be receive official party status.
