Former Minister of Education Shifa Mohamed has been transferred to house arrest following her arrest during a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest on Tuesday.
Sun is aware that Shifa was transferred to house arrest around noon today. Police did not provide details, but confirmed the former minister’s transfer. Criminal Court on Wednesday extended Shifa’s detention period by seven days.
Shifa Mohamed is a veteran of the education sector with long years of service including a tenure as the principal of Iskandar School. MDP’s presidential candidate, Former president Mohamed Nasheed visited the detention centre in Dhoonidhoo island on Friday to visit the former minister.
Following a Supreme Court’s injunction to postpone the second round of the presidential polls, MDP has commenced a series of nightly protests on the streets of Male’ calling for a quick verdict and prompt elections. The protests have seen the arrest and release of a number of MDP supporters, including Members of Parliament.
