Maldives delayed elections has potential for trouble, says UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs

United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco has told the UN Security Council that the delay in elections in the Maldives has “a potential for trouble.”

Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs made the statement during a briefing to the Security Council on the Maldives on Wednesday.

Oscar Fernandez-Taranco also told the council that recent democratic gains in the Maldives are "under threat” due to delayed elections.

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said; "We continue to follow the situation in the Maldives with concern in light of the mounting tension" since the postponement of the election.

Several international organization and foreign governments have stressed the importance of the Supreme Court to expedite the election case and hold prompt polls to avoid unrest in the country.
