MDP will accept Supreme Court

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that they will accept any verdict issued by the Supreme Court for Jumhoory Party’s election case seeking to annul the results of the first round of the presidential election.

Speaking to the press during Friday night’s MDP protest in Chaandhanee Magu, the party's vice presidential candidate Dr Musthafa Luthfee said that they trust the Supreme Court’s judgment and that they will accept the court's decision.

“We are willing to accept the Supreme Court’s verdict. We believe that the Supreme Court judgment will serve justice.”

“They are collecting the evidence themselves, conducting the investigation themselves. We do not believe that they will pass an unfair judgment after all this,” Dr Luthfee said.

He said that the court has to consider the country’s peace and security when they pass their judgment and that an unfair verdict may plunge the country into chaos.

He said that the party’s main rival, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) also wants to see quick and peaceful elections and that the people must elect a leader in order to maintain peace in the country.

He said that MDP’s nightly of protests, calling for quick elections, are peaceful and accused the police of obstructing the protesters' freedom of assembly. He criticized the police for arresting protesters and called on them to “stop the torture.”

Five supporters were arrested from MDP protests on Friday night.
