President Waheed will be accorded protection, decides PPM

The Council of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has decided that PPM, if it wins the presidential election, will accord the protection, honour and privileges due to a former president, to President Dr Mohamed Waheed.

This was decided unanimously by the members present at a meeting of the party’s Council tonight.

PPM said that the purpose of this decision is to assure President Waheed that PPM will accord him due treatment as prescribed in the law, unlike former President Mohamed Nasheed’s government, which violated the Constitution and the laws when dealing with former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom.

PPM said that President Waheed has been informed of this decision.

PPM said that Nasheed’s government violated Article 128 of the Constitution, and the Act on Protection and Privileges to former presidents.

President Waheed has decided to support presidential candidate of PPM Abdulla Yameen in the second round of the presidential election.

President Waheed, however, also unexpectedly met with Nasheed on Wednesday night. The meeting lasted about fifteen minutes.
