The chief human rights institution of the State, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has called on authorities to take legal actions against those who attempt to instigate violence in the country.
In a press statement released on Sunday, HRCM stated that all those who try to instigate violence should be sought and prosecuted.
The commission called on all parties to be calm and patience, to act within the legal framework and to make every effort to protect the interests of the nation.
HRCM also called on State institutions to ensure that the people of the Maldives do not lose faith in democratic system.
“Refrain from abusing one another, from damaging people’s property and to abstain from making antagonizing remarks. We call [on the authorities] to investigate those who breaches proper conduct and to take action against them,” the HRCM statement read.
Speaking to Sun, HRCM Member Ahmed Abdul Kareem said that the commission is observing the protests by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), being staged nightly following the Supreme Court order to postpone the second round of the presidential elections.
