Defence Minister and Attorney General notified of motion of no confidence

Parliament has sent the notice for a vote of no confidence against Minister of Defence and National Security Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim and Attorney General Azima Shakoor.

The parliament secretariat said today that two cabinet members have been notified of the vote of confidence against them 14 days prior to the vote, as per article 101 (b) of the constitution.

The no confidence motion was presented to parliament with 26 signatures of the members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group.

Article 101 (a) of the Constitution requires the signatures of at least 10 MPs to present a motion of confidence against a member of the cabinet, to parliament.

Article 101 (b) of the Constitution requires the parliament to deliver a notice to the cabinet member, at least fourteen days prior to the parliament debate of the motion and also states that the cabinet member shall have the right to defend himself in the sittings of the parliament, both orally and in writing.

MDP has once before asked for a no confidence motion against Defence Minister Nazim. The motion was recalled.
