Police increases efforts to quell arson attacks

Police have increased efforts to reduce the number of arson attacks, on the rise across country following the first round the presidential elections.

Speaking to the press today, Superintendent of Police Abdulla Nawaz said that they have increased conducting random checks of vehicles.

“Deliberate acts of arson have greatly increased in the atolls and in Male’. Police are trying to stop this, and we have increased [the amount] of vehicles we stop and check.”

“We don’t yet suspect political parties, or parties with a political motive, to be behind these arson attacks. But we have to note that these incidents surge every time there is a political disorder,” Nawaz said

He said that deliberate attacks on families of police officers have been noted recently and that such attacks have devastating effect on the morale of the police officers, especially working away from their families.

“There is an ongoing attack on the families of police officers. This will not have a good outcome,” Nawaz said.

He said that Police have arrested a total of 35 individuals in the recent the recent unrest that has gripped the nation following the September 7th polls.

“Police will make every effort to uphold the constitution and the laws,” Nawaz said.
