The Police Integrity Commission (PIC) has said that sufficient evidence does not exist to prove that MP Reeko Moosa Manik was assaulted by Police Media Official Mohamed Atheef during the mass protest by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on 8 February 2012 following the change of government, and decided not to forward the case to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office.
PIC said in a letter addressed to Atheef that a statement was provided by one person claiming that Atheef assaulted Moosa Manik, but as this is not sufficient evidence to prove the case against Atheef, it will not be forwarded to the PG Office.
Atheef told Sun Online today that he tried to protect Moosa Manik during the protest, and assured that he will not assault anyone when carrying out his duties as a police officer in the future as well.
Several police officers and civilians suffered injuries during the protest on 8 February 2012, and several claims of assault by police officers are under investigation by the PIC.
