The Elections Commission (EC) has decided that the second round of the presidential election will not be held on Saturday, as per the Supreme Court order.
This was decided at an emergency meeting of the commission held tonight, which commenced at 11:00 p.m. and went on for one and a half hours. The meeting was attended by senior officials of the commission.
After the meeting, Vice President of the EC Ahmed Fayaz Hassan told Sun Online that it had been decided during the meeting, that no election will be held on Saturday.
“It’s not possible to provide details of this meeting. We decided not to hold the election in violation of a Supreme Court order,” he said.
He said that it was also decided not to proceed with further preparations for the election.
Meanwhile, President of Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeg told some media groups in an interview earlier tonight that the election will be held on Saturday.
He said that the second round of the election must be held after 21 days as per the Constitution, and that he believes that the second round must be held on Saturday.
Following this, the Supreme Court has ordered security forces to take action against all groups that violate the Supreme Court order to postpone the second round of the presidential election.
