Mustafa and Shafeeq to run for MDP ticket for Thimarafushi by-election

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that Mohamed Mustafa and Ahmed Shafeeq would be contesting for party ticket for the upcoming by-election to elect an MP for the now vacant Thimarafushi Constituency seat.

Imtiaz Fahmy, MDP Spokesperson, confirmed today that Mustafa and Shafeeq had entered their names for the party ticket.

Mustafa was the MP for Thimarafushi Constituency, and he lost his seat on the 20th of this month, when the Supreme Court held that he was not eligible to remain in Parliament due to an unfulfilled debt obligation.

As soon as Mustafa lost his seat, he promised that he would repay the debt in question and re-run in the by-election.

Ahmed Shafeeq, the other candidate for the ticket, is a former Minister of State, and he was a member of the People’s Special Majlis for M. Atoll Constituency, during the time when the Special Majlis wrote the present Constitution. Shafeeq is now a Member of MDP National Council.

MDP Spokesperson Imtiaz said that party candidate would be decided in a primary to be held on the 7th of next month.

The by-election to elect an MP for Thimarafushi would be held on the 14th of April.
