The parliament has announced that it resume the extraordinary sitting that was suspended this morning, amid heated arguments and shouting between MPs, tonight.
The Parliament Office said in a statement that the sitting had to be cancelled after MPs caused serious damage to equipment at the parliament hall.
According to the statement, the sitting has been scheduled to resume at 9:00 p.m. tonight, after repairing the damaged equipment.
The decision not to proceed with the sitting was made after discussions between parliamentary group leaders failed to make any headway.
Today’s sitting was scheduled following a request signed by 29 members of the MDP parliamentary group, stating that political rivals of former president Mohamed Nasheed have trampled constitutional principles, and have started to deviate from course of democratic values, and thus, to make the independent institutions of the State accountable through the constitution.
The sitting was suspended following heated arguments between MPs and some MPs attempting to obstruct the administrative staff of the parliament.
