Presidential candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed has said that his government will pass laws to facilitate the development and protect artists in the Maldives.
Speaking to a gathering of Maldivian artists in Dharubaaruge, Hakura Maalam today, the former president said that the new laws will open new opportunities for Maldivian artists.
“Laws, regulations. Even laws, which will be a step towards the protection and development of Maldivian artists,” Nasheed said.
He said that a MDP government will establish systems where artists can perform and generate a revenue from future guest house businesses in local islands.
Nasheed noted that the government has been inadequate in providing financial and other forms of support for Maldivian artists, and said that artists and performers can generate enough money and earn a good living, if the government can facilitate for such businesses.
He said that MDP’s initiative to connect Maldivian artists with the tourism industry is working to establish entertainment programs by artists in tourist resorts.
Former president Mohamed Nasheed also promised to establish music studios around the country within the first 100 days of his presidency.
