JP to request SC to allow security forces to monitor election documents

Running mate of the presidential candidate of Jumhooree Party (JP) Dr Hassan Saeed has said that the Supreme Court will be requested to allow security forces to monitor all documents related to the presidential election, until the court rules on the case filed by JP regarding the election.

Dr Saeed said this while speaking to reporters in JP’s main campaign hall Kunooz this afternoon.

He said that an official of the Elections Commission told JP about four days ago, that efforts will be made by the commission to dispose of some documents related to the election.

He said that JP reported this to the police, and also discovered that some garbage bags taken out of the commission this morning contained several documents related to the election.

He said that JP had been informed that the Elections Commission disposed of several documents related to the election over the past two or three days.

“We don’t know what exactly has been discarded. We received information three, four, maybe five days ago, that efforts will be made to discard documents. Our source was confident that this would be done, and asked us to take action to prevent this,” he said.

He said that the court will be requested to ensure that the situation is monitored, such that the documents kept in the commission are not discarded.

Dr Saeed highlighted that the election on 7 September 2013 was the first election in which the police were not involved to any extent. He said that in previous elections, the police monitored the ballot boxes and were involved in transporting the ballot boxes from one location to another.

“We saw officials of Elections Commission transporting ballot boxes in taxis. There are people who witnessed this,” he said.

He said that JP would accept the Supreme Court ruling on this case regardless of which group the ruling is in favour of, and that if the concerns surrounding the election are not solved through the court process, efforts will be made to amend the laws and regulations related to this matter.
