EC President's wife should not be allowed in political activities, says JP Deputy Leader Ilham

Deputy Leader of Jumhoory Party Ilham Ahmed has stated that the wife of President of the Elections Commission, should not be allowed to take part in political activities.

Speaking at a press conference today, Ilham Ahmed said that the wife of the President of the Elections Commission (EC) is a lady entitled to health insurance provided by the State, including other benefits and thus, she should not be able to take part in political protests and other such activities.

“We provide [the wife of the President of the EC] with health insurance and other necessities. She is granted special privileges, to live with honour and to stay away from politics,” Ilham said.

Although EC President Fuad Thaufeeq had, amidst criticism earlier, stated that his wife is an independent person and that she should be able to decide her own political inclinations, Ilham said that a person should not take part in political activities when the State spends on certain privileges.

“Fuad Thaufeeq’s wife cannot go to protests. She cannot participate in political activities,” Ilham said.

He said that the wife of the EC President is protected by security provided by the State. He also said that the law does not allow her to take part in politics.

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has also condemned Fuad Thaufeeq’s wife’s participation Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protests and other political activities.
