A case has been filed to the Supreme Court by Jumhooree Party (JP), requesting the court to annul the results of the first round of the presidential election.
JP has also requested an injunction to delay the second round of the presidential election, until the court issues a ruling on the case requesting annulment of the first round results.
JP Deputy Leader, Gemanafushi MP Ilham Ahmed and a team of lawyers representing JP visited the court to file the case today. They submitted eight box files of documents to the court in relation to this case.
Speaking to reporters in M. Kunooz after submitting the case, Ilham said that this is the most serious case filed to court in the history of the Maldives, in relation to an election.
He said that cases have also been filed to court claiming that people below the age of 18 were included in the voters’ list by changing their birthdates, 10,000 names were included in the voters’ list by changing people’s names, and 5,000 names were included in the voters’ list by changing people’s addresses.
Ilham said that 600 names of people below the age of 18, and 1,000 names of people whose births were never registered, were also included in the voters’ list.
He said that there are irregularities surrounding about 40,000 votes cast in the first round, and that all the documents submitted to the court in relation to this case contain true information.
He said that investigations were conducted by a large team before the case was filed to Supreme Court, and that he hoped that the court will assess the case, which concerns the rights of 300,000 people, with due seriousness.
