The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has accused the Elections Commission of working to gain support for the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).
This remark by PPM member Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik came after the Elections Commission said yesterday that they will take action against groups that use religion to achieve political purposes.
Nihan said that instead of saying that they will take action against MDP for the illegal activities they carried out over the past one and a half years, the Elections Commission was making remarks to gain support for MDP.
He said that the Elections Commission has not responded to MDP’s presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed’s remarks whereby he mocked Prophet Mohamed, and instead have said that action would be taken against the political parties that say that MDP is against Islam.
He said that his raises questions about the loyalty of the members of the Elections Commission.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Vice President of Elections Commission Ahmed Fayaz said that the commission should take action against political parties that use religion to gain political advantages, and that they should file cases to court asking to dissolve parties that ‘act in this manner’.
