The police have initiated investigations into alleged buying and selling of identity cards in Feydhoo, Addu City.
Chief Inspector of Police of South Police Division Ahmed Shifan said that several incidents have been reported to the police, where people visited houses in Feydhoo and asked people to give their identity cards, or gave them money and asked them to sell their identity cards.
Shifan said that several suspects have been identified in relation to this case, but no one has been arrested yet.
He said that selling identity cards counts as bribery, and that it is an offence to use identity cards in this manner.
Several cases came to light following the end of the first round of voting at the presidential election, of misuse and theft of identity cards.
