Elections Commission hands over documents requested by JP

The Elections Commission has handed over some documents requested by Jumhooree Party related to the presidential election.

Speaking at a press conference held by the commission today, Elections Commission Member Ali Mohamed Manik said that JP had requested for a copy of the voters’ list and ballot box sheets of Faafu and Dhaalu Atolls, and that these documents have been handed over to JP this evening.

He said that the country’s current laws do not leave room for ‘manipulation’ of votes by any group, as accused by JP.

“They severely criticised us in their speeches last night. Here’s the file - as soon as we received the documents of Faafu and Dhaalu Atolls, we verified them and have handed over a photocopy to the party moments ago,” said Ali Mohamed Manik.

Vice president of the commission said that JP requested for the voters’ list and ballot box sheets for all 470 ballot boxes, but this can only be provided following a court ruling.

High Court rejected a case filed by JP in relation to this matter earlier today, citing that the case does not fit in the criteria stipulated by Article 64 of the Elections (General) Act.
