Forward with the Nation coalition has answered statements by former president Mohamed Nasheed during the presidential debate last Sunday night that Dr. Mohamed Waheed’s government has made no effort for the progress of the country.

Speaking at news conference held in a coalition campaign post Raaveriya Restaurant, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Parliamentary Group Member Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed (Kaanal Nasheed) said that Dr. Waheed did not have the chance to answer some of the allegations directed at him by other candidates, during Sunday night's debate.

Rebutting claims by former president Mohamed Nasheed that Dr. Waheed’s government had not contributed to the development of the country, MP Nasheed said that Waheed’s government has initiated a number of harbour development, sewerage system and waste disposal projects across the country.

MP Nasheed stated that former president Nasheed could only initiate 17 sewerage system projects within his three years, compared to 46 such projects initiated by Dr. Waheed’s government during the past two years.

“Even if we look at sewerage systems alone, two systems have been established and are being utilized, in addition to 31 more sewerage system projects already initiated through the government budget, and 46 sewerage projects initiated in total. A total of 17 sewerage systems were completed within the three years,” MP Nasheed said.

He also said that President Waheed’s government has initiated water network projects in 10 different islands, compared to only such projects during Nasheed’s three years, and stated that the former government had made loose agreements with companies like India’s Tatva company. He said that waste management efforts are ongoing in the capital Male’ and 5 other islands in the atolls.

MP Nasheed noted that Dr. Waheed’s government had completed 7 harbour projects within 18 months, in addition to work on 13 harbour projects that are still ongoing.
