MDP holds campaign activities in City Council grounds

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has set up ‘huts’ in the area outside Male’ City Council building, and started using the area as a ‘campaign hall’ (jagaha).

The party has set up tables to make preparations for the presidential election, and put up banners showing their policies in the empty space behind the City Council building.

Member of Male’ City Council Ibrahim Sujau told Sun that the empty space has been rented out to MDP to hold political activities in accordance with the council’s regulations.

He said that the space has been leased to MDP until 5 September, and that they started using it about two days ago.

“The council often rents out the empty space. Perhaps because majority in the council is held by MDP, no other party has requested to rent this area. MDP’s activities in the area are conducted according to regulations,” he said.

Sujau said that the area has also been leased to Elections Commission for 6 and 7 September.

Following former president Mohamed Nasheed’s resignation, MDP has been using Usfasgandu to conduct political activities. Usfasgandu has also been leased to MDP by City Council.
