President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that the island of Gaafu Dhaalu Fiyoari should have an airport, and that he will propose this to the cabinet based on his discussions with the people of the island.
The president made this remark while addressing the people of Fiyoari today, as part of Forward with the Nation’s ongoing campaign tour in the atoll.
The president highlighted that it is possible to travel from Fiyoari to Kaadedhdhoo in 30 minutes by speedboat, and efforts are ongoing by a private company to develop an airport in Gadhdhoo in the same atoll.
“One thing the people of this island need is a better transport system. You have been talking about an airport for this island now for some time. This island needs an airport, that’s how transport can be made easier… I support the idea of the construction of an airport in this island. We have to determine where the airport should be located. I will propose this to the cabinet, based on my discussions with you,” he said.
He said that the people of Fiyoari should think about their future. He said that the island needs roads and a sewerage system, and expressed confidence that the health sector can also be improved.
The president also noted the work done within one and a half years, and said that much more will be done is he wins a five-year term.
