President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that our country is in a situation where people who commit serious crimes are free, while people who obey the law have lost their rights and have to stay locked up in their homes.
The president made this remark while speaking at the special function held on the occasion of Independence Day at Dharubaaruge last night.
“People who have been suspected of criminal offences continue to hold posts in state institutions. Murderers, arsonists are free for many years. The rights of our daughters and children remain unprotected. The loudest person seems to be the most powerful person today. The saddest part is that, amidst all this, the people who do not commit crimes and obey the law have to stay locked up in their homes. The people who are quiet and gentle have lost their rights,” he said.
The president also indirectly criticised the actions of former President of Civil Service Commission Mohamed Fahmy Hassan and Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed.
“[Some people] want to remain, to be able to order a large number of state employees. We are in a situation where doubts have been created among the people about the highest court,” he said.
After making those remarks, he said that he did not wish to comment on such issues in his capacity as the head of state.
“I am not happy about commenting on such issues in my capacity as the head of state,” he said.
