Thimarafushi Constituency by-election announced

Elections Commission of the Maldives has announced People’s Majlis by-election for Thimarafushi Constituency, as the seat became vacant following the Supreme Court decision this week.

Supreme Court decided that Mohamed Mustafa, former MP for Thimarafushi, was constitutionally ineligible to remain in his seat.

An announcement from the Elections Commission today said that by-election for Thimarafushi would be held on 14th April 2012, Saturday.

Candidates for the seat are required to submit applications between Monday next week and 11th of March. Forms would be received at the reception counter of Elections Commission every working day, from 9:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

The announcement also stated that every candidate should keep a deposit of MRF 5000/- with the application documents and non-partisan candidates should present 50 signatures from the constituency too, in accordance with the requirements of law.

Partisan candidates should submit a resolution of the political party he/she is representing, together with the application documents.
