Ministry signs harbour construction projects for Hirimaradhoo and Vilufushi

Government has today signed the harbour development projects of Haa Dhaalu Hirimaradhoo and Thaa Vilufushi.

The project agreements were signed at a ceremony held this morning, where Hirimaradhoo project was handed over to a local private contractor, Heavy Force Pvt. Ltd. and the Vilufushi project to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Plc. (MTCC).

Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu signed both contracts on behalf of the government.

Housing Ministry announced today that a 400 by 200 feet harbour will be constructed in Hirimaradhoo at a cost of MVR 24 million. The project is to be completed within 297 days, the Ministry said. Both projects are paid for by State budget.

They said that Vilufushi project will see redevelopment of the island's harbour, which will undergo fortification and revetment and will also have the harbour’s entrance renovated. The project is to be completed within 95 days, the Ministry said, for a cost of MVR 5.4 million.

Housing Minister Muizzu had previously stated that the Ministry of Finance had advised them to refrain from undertaking new projects to limit spending from the State budget. When asked why the Ministry has recently taken up large developmental projects for the islands, the Minister said that all recent projects have been approved by the Ministry of Finance.
