Loans have been provided to 942 students for higher education in the Maldives and abroad, under the Tertiary Loan Scheme introduced by the government.
Speaking at a ceremony held at Youth Centre today to present the loan documents to successful applicants, Minister of State for Education Aminath Ali said that the ministry announced 500 slots under the Tertiary Loan Scheme, but received 942 applications.
“We decided to give loans to all the students who applied, because they all met the criteria for receiving this loan,” she said.
Under this scheme, 333 students received loans to obtain education at local institutions, while 609 students received loans to obtain education abroad.
In the Maldives, 71 students received loans to study for diploma, 234 students received loans to study for bachelor’s degree, and 28 students received loans to study for master’s degree.
As for opportunities abroad, 382 students received loans to study for bachelor’s degree and 227 students received loans to study for master’s degree.
Aminath Ali said that last year, the ministry announced 1,000 slots under the Tertiary Loan Scheme and gave loans to all 540 students who applied.
