Nasheed

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has warned former minister Ilyas Ibrahim, the brother of the wife of former President Abdul Gayoom.

Nasheed made these remarks while speaking at a rally held by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Gaafu Alifu Dhaandhoo last night.

“What I’m saying tonight is not something I had planned to say. Not something I even want to say. But I can’t help saying this tonight. Former minister honourable Ilyas Ibrahim, our government accorded him due honour. What I want to say to Ilyas tonight is, you have been honoured by the state, please remember that everyone is treated equally. I won’t say anything more about you during this presidential election. There are people who have been honoured by the state, they should keep their actions a certain way. I was hoping that unlike several other people, he would know, with his honour, how to stay away from politics. I want to repeat, and tell you that everyone will be treated equally,” said Nasheed.

Nasheed’s government formed a Presidential Commission and spent MVR 21.9 million to investigate the corrupt activities of the previous government, but they did not investigate the infamous FPID issue, which according to reports, is the most serious corruption case in the recent history of the Maldives.

Some people say that Nasheed’s government did not investigate the FPID case because another person greatly involved in this corruption was Abdul Sattar, the former husband of MDP’s former Chairperson Mariya Ahmed Didi.

Nasheed’s remarks regarding Ilyas came after Ilyas endorsed Jumhooree Party presidential candidate Gasim Ibrahim.

Nasheed said that the people who continue to use offensive language when addressing him, are the members of the previous, 30-year regime. He said that the members of the previous government tried to enslave and intimidate the people of the Maldives, and therefore, they would be incapable of speaking without using offensive language.
