Court has added 15 days to the detention of a man arrested in Gaafu Alif Vilingili for beating his wife, inflicting severe injuries.
The man has been identified as Ahmed Mueed, 33, of Vaadheege, Gaafu Alif Vilingili.
Mueed’s detention period was extended by the Gaafu Alif Vilingili Magistrate Court last Thursday, 8th of August.
Mueed was summoned to the police on the same day after his wife was taken to the Atoll Hospital for injuries she had received by him, where upon his statement was recorded and released. However, Mueed was soon arrested under the law against domestic violence after the police received complaints from the wife’s family.
One of the wife’s younger siblings told Sun that the abuse has been ongoing for sometime and that Mueed tends to beat his wide in front of their 4-year-old child. The sibling explained that last night’s beating had left the wife bleeding from her nose and mouth, with bruises and cuts on several parts of her body. Her 4 year old son is in trauma, the sibling said, and had not been able to sleep.
“My sister was prohibited from going to our mother’s house. She wasn’t allowed to go out of the house either. They fight, and all these beatings happen in front of the child. She’s telling us all this after being admitted in the hospital with her injuries,” the women’s younger sibling told Sun, on condition of anonymity.
On the day of the arrest, police confirmed that they arrested a man from Vilingili for abusing his wife and said that they first released him because it was a “family issue”. They explained that they later arrested the man, after receiving a report of the injuries he had supposedly inflicted on his wife. Police had earlier said that they will ask the court for an extension on his detention under the Act on Prevention of Domestic Violence.
Sun is aware that the Mueed’s first marriage also ended up in a divorce because he had repeatedly abused his wife and that the matter was investigated the relevant authorities.
Sun has also come to know that Mueed has a record of drug abuse.
