A man has been arrested in Gaafu Alif Vilingili last night for beating his wife, inflicting severe injuries.
The man has been identified as Ahmed Mueed, 33, of Vaadheege, Gaafu Alif Vilingili.
Mueed was summoned to the police after his wife was taken to the Atoll Hospital for injuries she had received by him, where upon the police had recorded his statement and released him. However, Mueed was soon arrested under the law against domestic violence, after the police received complaints from the woman’s family.
One of the woman’s younger siblings told Sun that the abuse has been ongoing for sometime and that the Mueed tends to beat his wide in front of their 4-year-old child. The sibling explained that last night’s beating had left the woman bleeding from her nose and mouth, with bruises and cuts on several parts of her body. Her 4 year old son is in trauma, the sibling said, and had not been able to sleep last night.
“My sister was prohibited from going to our mother’s house. She wasn’t allowed to go out of the house either. They fight, and all these beatings happen in front of the child. She’s telling us all this after being admitted in the hospital with her injuries,” the women’s younger sibling told Sun, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Police confirmed that they have arrested a man from Vilingili for abusing his wife. They said that the man was first released because it was a “family issue” and was later arrested after receiving a report of the injuries suffered by the wife. Police said that he will be presented before court and asked for an extension on his detention under the Act on Prevention of Domestic Violence.
Sun is aware that the Mueed’s first marriage also ended up in a divorce because he had repeatedly abused his wife and that the matter was investigated the relevant authorities.
Sun has also come to know that Mueed has a record of drug abuse.
