Cartunes asked to pay MVR 339,256 to Customs for smuggled goods

Cartunes International Private Limited has been asked to pay MVR 339,256.78, including fines, to Maldives Customs for smuggling undeclared goods into the country last month.

Customs denied entry for a 40-foot container carrying vehicles and vehicle spare parts brought in by Cartunes on 19 June, in an operation conducted after receiving information that Cartunes was attempting to smuggle in undeclared goods.

Customs said in a statement that Cartunes had been fined MVR 39,408.00 under the Customs Act for declaring a lower value than the actual value of the shipment.

Cartunes had also been fined MVR 133,280 under the Customs Act after the investigation revealed that the shipment contained more goods than stated on the declaration documents, said Customs.

Customs said that Cartunes would also be required to pay MVR 166,568.78 to Customs as import duty for the additional goods.
