Elections Commission accepts candidacy of President Waheed, Yameen and Gasim

The Elections Commission has accepted the presidential election candidacy filed by President Dr Mohamed Waheed, Progressive Party of Maldives’ (PPM) Parliamentary Group Leader Abdullah Yameen and Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Gasim Ibrahim.

President of Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeg told Sun Online that this decision, that President Waheed, Yameen and Gasim meet the requirements of a presidential candidate, was made at a special meeting held today regarding the presidential election.

Candidacy forms were filed by President Waheed yesterday, and Yameen and Gasim today.

President Waheed has decided to run for presidency as an independent candidate. He submitted signatures of more than 2,000 people along with his candidacy form to the Elections Commission.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed filed his candidacy on 18 July, and his candidacy was accepted by the commission later that afternoon.

All candidates who announced that they would run for presidency have now filed their candidacies to the commission.
