The Supreme Court has rejected the case filed by former Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Mustafa, requesting the court to declare that Kendhoo MP Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has lost his parliamentary seat.
Mustafa told Sun Online that the Supreme Court notified him that the case had been rejected last Tuesday.
“I received a document from the Supreme Court last Tuesday, which said that they are not able to accept the case. According to the document, this decision was made by the judges last Sunday,” said Mustafa.
Mustafa said that the document also stated that Thasmeen had appealed the High Court’s ruling, whereby the High Court ordered Thasmeen to repay MVR 1.9 million he owed to Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim, in Supreme Court.
Mustafa said that the Supreme Court cited this as the reason for not being able to accept the case filed by him.
Thasmeen has paid the MVR 1.9 million he owed to Nazim through the Civil Court. After clearing this debt, Thasmeen said that it was not a legally binding debt.
Thasmeen said that he repaid the money in full because Nazim had tried to take advantage of the situation.
In a statement, Thasmeen said that he and Nazim had a friendship dating back to their school years and that this mutual trust had led him to borrow the money without signing a legally binding agreement.
He said that the money was obtained to compensate for financial losses he had suffered in politics, and that he was saddened that Nazim would try to take advantage of the political atmosphere and circumstances.
