President Dr Mohamed Waheed has obtained 1,500 signatures from supporters, as required by the law in order to contest in the presidential election as an independent candidate.
President Waheed’s Political Advisor Ahmed Thaufeeg said that efforts are ongoing to obtain even more signatures.
“As you know, the law states that independent candidates must present signatures of 1,500 supporters with the documents to the Elections Commission. But we are trying to obtain even more signatures,” he said.
Thaufeeg said that the form would be submitted to the Elections Commission, along with the additional signatures, on Sunday.
He said that President Waheed is also currently conducting a door-to-door campaign in Male’, and that campaign efforts by the Forward with the Nation coalition are ongoing as previously planned.
An event was held at Hilaaleege last night to obtain signatures of 1,500 of President Waheed’s supporters.
