Hoodlums vandalize crops in Fonadhoo and Gan

Some hoodlums have vandalized agricultural crops in the islands of L. Fonadhoo and L. Gan, causing serious damage to water melon, chili and egg plant crops that have been grown for the upcoming Ramadan season.

A farmer from Fonadhoo told Sun that the hooligans, whose identity had not been established, had last night entered and caused much destruction to four farms, and that all the fruits and other crops had been completely destroyed. According to reports, two out of the four damaged farms are in Fonadhoo, and the others in Gan. Also, the amount of loss has been estimated at MRF70,000.

Azeeza Moosa, owner of one of the damaged farms said that her farm was destroyed with a sharp weapon. “Trees and vines were cut into pieces and fruits were destroyed too”, she said. She said that she would have supplied four tons of water melon during the 30 days of Ramadan, and that her loss would not be less than MRF16, 000.

Police said that the incidents were being investigated, and that no suspects had yet been identified.
