President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that more than MVR 1 billion is owed to the government by various groups, and that this money must be collected.
Speaking at a meeting held at the President’s Office this afternoon regarding finding solutions to the problems noted in audit reports of government ministries, the president said that this money belongs to the people and that it must be collected.
The President’s Office said that despite several problems having been noted in the audit reports in the past, government offices had faced numerous challenges in taking adequate measures to address those problems.
The president said that currently, the system that is in place poses several problems and difficulties, and measures have to be taken to solve those issues.
He said that efforts must be made to facilitate implementation in accordance with the existing laws and regulations, and in this regard, since it is everyone’s duty to work towards what is best for the people, it is necessary to improve the operation of government offices.
President Waheed said that the management of government offices needs to be monitored, and measures must be taken to ensure continuous improvement in the manner in which budgets and human resources are utilised.
He said that the issues noted in the audit reports of government offices and institutions should be redressed, and efforts should be made to solve the problems and also measure the progress made in doing so within a defined period of time.
