Four arrested in Thinadhoo for obstructing President Waheed

Four people have been arrested for obstructing President Dr Mohamed Waheed and attacking some members of his team as they arrived in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo.

An official of Thinadhoo Magistrate Court told Sun Online that the suspects who were taken to court for the purpose of extending detention periods were Thamdheeh Mohamed of Atholhuthereyge, Thinadhoo; Amjad Mohamed of Blue Heaven Aage, Thinadhoo; Shaheed Hassan of Udha, Thinadhoo; and Ahmed Saleem of Laalubaau Aage, Thinadhoo.

He said that they were given detention periods of 12 days by the court.

The official further said that Thamdheeh Mohamed and Amjad Mohamed were arrested yesterday, while Shaheed Hassan and Ahmed Saleem were arrested last night.

They have been accused by the police of working with more people to create unrest, obstruct police duties and attacking some officials and police officers as President Waheed and his team arrived in the island on 12 June.

President Waheed visited Thinadhoo to hold a campaign rally of his coalition.

Meanwhile, Thamdheeh has already been charged with terrorism by the State following the arson attacks in Thinadhoo on 8 February 2012.

He has been accused of gathering with a group near Thinadhoo Police Station on the evening of 8 February 2012, attacking police officers and causing damage to the police station and property. He has also been accused of standing outside the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Council Office and encouraging the crowd inside the office to cause damage to the building.
