Rabita al-Alam al-Islami opens an office in Maldives

Saudi Arabian organisation Rabita al-Alam al-Islami (Muslim World League) has opened an office in the Maldives today, and signed an agreement with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs regarding providing support to the Maldives in various areas.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Islamic Ministry to sign the agreement, Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said that the agreement and the establishment of an office of Rabita al-Alam al-Islami in the Maldives would facilitate assistance to the Maldives in social, religious and humanitarian issues.

“I think this would be beneficial for us in many ways. It would facilitate assistance for Maldivian students, Maldivian institutions, Maldivian mosques, and help the education of Maldivian students,” he said.

Asian Region Director of Rabita al-Alam al-Islami Fahad Mohamed said that great effort was put in by the Islamic Ministry to establish the office, and that it would facilitate training for teachers, and the opportunity for Maldivians to participate in courses related to various aspects of life.

He said that the office would also work towards giving Maldives the opportunity to host international conferences and workshops.

Speaking at the ceremony, President of Rabita al-Alam al-Islami Male' Office Abdul Razzag said that educational and social projects will commence shortly.

Minister Shaheem said that a non-operational office of Rabita al-Alam al-Islami had existed in the Maldives for about 15 years.

When asked by Sun Online why the office has not been operational, the minister said that he did not wish to comment on the matter.

The office will temporarily be located at the Islamic Centre building, and Minister Shaheem said that it will later be transferred to the Islamic Centre to be constructed in Hulhumale’.
